200 races in a year: the wonderful chase of Bryan Clauson

This is a story of motorsports coming far, far away from Europe and from Italy (my country). This is a story that reminds the glorious past of racing, when many drivers jumped in different cars on every weekend. This is the story of Bryan Clauson.

Let's start with a few information about him... Bryan Clauson was born on June 15th (1989) at Carmichael (California), but he spent his childhood at Noblesville (Indiana), 30 miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the most famous oval track in the world. In 2016 Bryan will try to achieve an enormous target. Our man will start over 200 races from January 1st to December 31th. On average he will run a race every 44 hours.

The official name is "The Chasing 200 Tour - Circular Insanity". Finding the meaning it's simple: Bryan will race almost entirely on ovals, mostly in dirt tracks.

Bryan Clauson has already won the USAC National Midget Series (two times), the USAC National Sprint Car Series (twice) an the USAC National Drivers Championship (three times); In 2016 he will race in different championships, with winged cars and non-winged ones. But it will be there a notable exception. In May the driver from Noblesville will attempt the qualification for the 100th Indy 500. The Jonathan Byrd's Racing will be his team for the entire season, but in Indianapolis they will be also helped technically by KVSH.

"My main goal for 2016 is to complete the Chasing 200 tour" - says Bryan - "I have over 200 races scheduled for 2016 that include many of short track racings biggest events in all different forms of dirt track racing. It will be a tall task but a lot of effort and planning has gone into this season, and I am looking forward to racing more than ever before!"

After his two previous experiences, Clauson will attempt the qualification at Indy also in 2016. For him is not a normal race...
"Racing the Indianapolis 500 is one of the greatest achievements of my racing career. Indy is such a special place and the 500 is such a special event to be a part of. I grew up around the area, so May has always been a special month my entire life. In terms of getting the opportunity, the first year I ran (2012) we had to work really hard to put together the funding to make it happen. 2015 was a bit of a different story. The Byrd family found me in 2014 and put together a comprehensive platform that can be seen across all of our racing endeavors. I really didn't do any work on the money side of things for 2015".


Clauson has already experienced Indycar, so he can give a trusted opinion to judge the series - now growing in Europe thanks to the increasing interest brought by the media. "Indycar has become the fortunate beneficiary of a lot of young talent that left the European Ladder. I think the young talent in Indy Car is as good as its ever been. I believe to some degree thats also what hurts Indy Car in the American Demographic. There are several talented young americans in the field, the problem is they grew up racing in Europe. People in the U.S. have no connection. That’s where NASCAR got it right when it was booming: people were tuning in to see the people they grew up watching at the local track on Saturday night. In Indycar it doesn't happen anymore".

Bryan Clauson raced in NASCAR in 2008 (Nationwide Series), with some good results like the Pole Position at Daytona (in the Winn-Dixie 250 Powered by Coca-Cola) and a fifth place at Kentucky Speedway, both reached with the Ganassi team. "[NASCAR] It’s not anything I’m actively pursing. Obviously if the right opportunity came along I’d love to take another crack at it. I feel like I have some unfinished business, but I am extremely happy doing what I’m doing. I make a comfortable living and completely enjoy going to the race track and strapping in each and every night!"

In the last five years Bryan achieved his best results. He's not only a championship frontrunner, but also a great single-race winner. His win at the 2014 Chili Bowl (named also the "Super Bowl of Midget racing" and attended by big names of NASCAR, Indycar and NHRA) was one of the brightest point in his career. An event like this is not present in the European panorama of Motorsports, while in North America is not the only one. Sure the tipology of racing is quite different, but from the money "point of view" Europe and US are similar. Here's the thought of Bryan about the topic: "I think motorsport is like anything in life. It's all about timing. The right performance in front of the right person in the crowd could be life changing. There are only so many professional seats left in motorsport and they continue to dwindle. The sport has evolved into more of a business and money has become as much of a prerequisite as talent is in a lot of cases. At the end of the day you have to race because you love to race. If you get caught up in worrying about the bright lights and superstardom, it makes the trek to the top that much more grueling. I prefer to race without that type of pressure".

It will be an incredible year for Bryan, not only on the race tracks but also in his normal life. He will travel a lot, staying far from home for a long time. "I haven’t actually counted the days I will be gone, but I’ve grown accustomed to life on the road. We will have an RV that will serve as our “home away from home” and will make being gone a little bit easier. You learn to adapt as it is part of the job, but having my dogs (Chevy has a Twitter account...) and my girlfriend Lauren on the road with me full-time certainly makes being away a lot easier".

200 gare in un anno, il grande obiettivo di Bryan Clauson

Questa è una storia di motorsport che si sviluppa molto lontano dalla nostra arcigna Europa. Questa è una storia che ricorda in qualche modo il passato, quando molti piloti saltavano da una macchina all'altra in ogni weekend disponibile. Questa è la storia di Bryan Clauson.

Per chi non lo sapesse (e, credetemi, immagino che in Italia tanti non abbiano idea di chi sto parlando) Bryan Clauson è uno statunitense nato il 15 giugno del 1989 a Carmichael, in California e che ha vissuto a Noblesville in Indiana, a poco più di 30 miglia di distanza dall'ovale da corsa più famoso al mondo. Perché ne sto parlando? Bèh, perché Bryan vivrà un 2016 da record. Il nostro si è posto l'obiettivo di correre oltre 200 corse in questo anno solare. Di media, una gara più o meno ogni 44 ore.

Il nome ufficiale è "The Chasing 200 Tour", ma quello che più fa capire di cosa si tratta è... il sottotitolo, definito "Circular Insanity" vista l'abbondanza di circuiti ovali nei quali il pilota americano correrà.

Bryan Clauson ha vinto per due volte la USAC National Midget Series, altrettante volte la USAC National Sprint Car Series e in tre occasioni l'USAC National Drivers Championship; proprio queste tipologie di gara (su ovali sterrati) lo terranno più impegnato nel 2016. Sarà presente nei maggiori campionati sanzionati da USAC, oltre che negli eventi del World of Outlaws e correrà con mezzi Winged e Non-Winged.

Durante l'anno, però, ci sarà un altro importante traguardo da raggiungere: la qualificazione alla 500 Miglia di Indianapolis con il Jonathan Byrd's Racing, struttura che usufruirà della consulenza del team KVSH proprio per l'occasione. Lo stesso team sarà comunque al suo fianco durante tutta la stagione.

"Ho oltre 200 corse in programma per il 2016, con un calendario che mi darà modo di correre in molti dei maggiori eventi di short track statunitensi, per altro in differenti campionati. Si tratta di un obiettivo piuttosto ambizioso, ma ho messo tutta la mia anima e profuso ogni sforzo per pianificare tutto al meglio. La mia voglia di correre non è mai stata così alta come oggi", dice Bryan. La sua avventura sarà vissuta su tutto il territorio statunitense, con una sicura puntata sull'asfalto dell'Indianapolis Motor Speedway a Maggio.

"Correre alla 500 Miglia è già stato uno dei più grandi traguardi della mia carriera. Indianapolis è un luogo speciale e l'evento ha una portata gigantesca. Sono cresciuto in quell'area, quindi quando il mese di Maggio è sempre stato centrale nella mia vita. La prima volta che corsi, nel 2012, lavorammo molto e duramente per trovare i fondi necessari per partecipare, e non fu facile. Mentre nel 2015 è stata una storia differente. L'anno prima la famiglia Byrd cominciò ad aiutarmi, e fu così che mettemmo insieme la piattaforma sulla quale poter costruire il progetto attuale, senza dover da parte mia lavorare sugli sponsor come in precedenza".

Clauson ha quindi toccato con mano il mondo Indycar, e può quindi dare un parere autorevole sul maggiore interesse per la serie che - pare - ci sia in Europa e sul seguito reale che ha negli States. "La Indycar è diventata la fortunata beneficiaria di un sacco di giovani talenti che hanno lasciato le competizioni europee, e penso che attualmente la griglia della Indycar sia tra le migliori di sempre. Tuttavia credo anche che in una certa maniera ciò la renda meno attraente verso gli appassionati americani. Ci sono molti giovani talenti qui, ma il problema è che sono cresciuti agonisticamente in Europa. Manca quindi una connessione con i fan statunitensi. Ed è qui che la NASCAR ha trovato la gallina dalle uova d'oro: le persone accendono la tv per guardare gli stessi piloti che hanno visto nelle piste locali il sabato notte, mentre per la Indycar questo passaggio non esiste quasi più".

La storia tra Clauson e la NASCAR è stata breve, anche se con alcuni punti esclamativi. La pole nella Nationwide Series a Daytona nel 2008 (precisamente la Winn-Dixie 250 Powered by Coca-Cola) e il quinto posto) e il quinto posto al Kentucky Speedway nello stesso anno sono stati i suoi migliori risultati, raggiunti con il team di Chip Ganassi. "Non sto attivamente cercando una chance in NASCAR, ma ovviamente sarei felice di correre ancora nella categoria se capitasse l'opportunità giusta. Mi sento come se avessi ancora un conto aperto in questo caso, ma sono comunque estremamente felice di concentrarmi su quello che attualmente sto facendo, perché mi diverto e sono competitivo. Insomma, mi godo tutta la vita fuori e dentro la pista".

Negli ultimi cinque anni Bryan ha raggiunto i suoi migliori risultati. Non si tratta solo di campionati, ma anche di prestigiose gare come il Chili Bowl, definito anche come il Superbowl delle corse Midget e frequentato da affermati piloti provenienti dalla NASCAR, dalla NHRA e dall'Indycar. Sull'albo d'oro della corsa il suo nome è affiancato all'anno 2014. Il mondo delle Sprint e delle Midget è però lontanissimo dalle abitudini europee del Motorsport, e di conseguenza la presenza mediatica è quasi nulla. Ma questi mondi sono davvero così diversi? Assolutamente no. Un esempio solo per tutti: l'importanza dei budget. Ecco il Clauson pensiero sull'argomento. "Penso che il motorsport sia come qualsiasi altro ambito della vita. Il contesto e il tempo sono le cose che contano. La performance giusta di fronte alle persone giuste tra la folla può cambiarti la vita. I sedili pregiati, che ti portano al vero professionismo, sono pochi e per altro continuano a diminuire. Il motorsport si è evoluto in una forma come un'altra di business e i soldi sono diventati in tanti casi un pre-requisito fondamentale tanto quanto lo è il talento. Alla fine però i piloti corrono perché amano correre, e se un giovane pilota dovesse preoccuparsi di diventare una stella e di stare sempre al centro dell'attenzione, allora la sua ascesa verso il top diventerebbe estremamente faticosa e enormemente stressante. Io preferisco pensare alle corse senza mettermi troppa pressione addosso."

Sarà un 2016 a mille all'ora, non solo in pista ma anche tra una gara e l'altra. Chissà se Bryan ha contato i giorni fuori casa... "Non ho davvero contato i giorni in cui sarò via, ma non è un problema: sono cresciuto praticamente on the road. Noi abbiamo un caravan che fa le veci della nostra casa quando siamo in viaggio, quindi questo facilita molto le cose. Imparare ad adattarsi fa parte del lavoro, non c'è dubbio. E in ogni caso la mia findanzata Lauren e i miei cani (dei quali uno, Chevy, ha un account su Twitter..) mi seguono sempre in questa vita nomade. La loro presenza è fondamentale per me."
